SUMMARY

Nuno did his PhD at the lab of Dr Salvador Benitah studying epigenetic regulation of epidermal stem cells. His work presented evidence for multiple combinatorial arrangements of the PRC1 polycomb complex during different stages differentiation or maintenance of stemness.

He then pursued his interest in tissue homeostasis and loss of function with age and joined the group of Dr Pankaj Kapahi at the Buck Institute for Research on Aging, in the San Francisco Bay Area, USA. There he joined a field that was increasingly aware that different tissues mount tissue-specific responses to a dietary intervention shown to increase longevity and healthspan, called Dietary Restriction (DR). He then showed that IRE1, a mediator of the Endoplasmic Reticulum stress response, is required for the response to DR. During DR, a metabolic shift, from a glycolytic towards an oxidative metabolism takes place, which encompasses higher lipid turnover, and IRE1 is required for these initial stages. He now aims to utilize his expertise in mechanisms of tissue homeostasis and ageing to study maintenance of protein homeostasis in the muscle.
